In most case scenario, when you subscribe to Office 365, you use DirSync/AADSync to synchronize your local Active Directory domain with Office 365.

Before enabling synchronization, you need to do an assessment of your domain, to ensure you’ll not have synchronization conflict due to duplicate UPN, mail or unsupported char.

Microsoft made a pretty nice tool called Office 365 IdFix.
