Backup Synology NAS Azure
Hello,
A lot of people owns a Synology NAS. For home or business, those devices are everywhere. Today, we’ll backup a folder from your Synology to an Azure Storage Account, and schedule it to run on a regular basis.This will allow you to backup your VHD, photos, or local backup to a distant location.
Prerequisites
- Azure Storage Account (can be LRS, GRS or RA-GRS)
- Its name
- Its access keys
- A Synology NAS with a recent version of DSM (Synology Operating System)
Backup Synology NAS Azure
Connect to your Synology server, and start “Hyper Backup” application:
Then, create a backup with the “+”:
Select “Azure” as a target:
Then, enter the “Name” and “Access Key” to your Azure Storage Account, then, click on the arrow, to create a new container, dedicated to your backups:
Type the name of your container (it must be lowercase):
Choose a folder name and it “Next”:
Select the folders you want to backup to Azure, it “Next”:
Select the applications you want to backup:
Choose a name for your task, select the appropriate options, and hit “Next”:
Configure rotation settings to fit your needs, and hit “Apply”:
Backup now, and you’re done:
Verification
Now, you can use Azure Storage Explorer or AzCopy to check if you data is in your Stoage Account. This task will use the Synology notification system:
- SMS
- Push
You may want to integrate this in your monitoring solution to keep track of your Azure Backup process success rate. In my testing, it’s pretty good.
